DESCRIPTION:An exhibition that goes beyond the borders of Palazzo Ardinghelli to tell a story of architecture\, cities and transformations.\nHoused in the newly restored rooms of Palazzo ONMI – a former nursery on Viale Duca degli Abruzzi and a testament to public architecture – the exhibition begins in the 1930s and unfolds as a continuous narrative of the urban landscape of Abruzzo. \nThe exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the transformations of the cities\, tracing the key stages in the processes of growth and redefinition of urban space. Architectural works\, emblematic events and dialogues with artistic production illustrate the evolution of the modern architectural language in Abruzzo up to the 1960s\, offering an overview of the forms and ideas that have shaped the region. \nProjects\, works of art\, archival documents\, film footage\, contemporary photographs and period photographs – drawn from private collections\, public archives and the MAXXI’s Collections of Contemporary Architecture and Design – highlight the continuities and changes involving three generations of designers\, spanning different historical periods and transcending ideological and political divides. \nThe exhibition is enriched by a series of artistic photographs commissioned from Andrea Jemolo. Through his contemporary perspective\, the images offer a modern interpretation of some of the region’s most significant projects\, creating a dialogue between the historical dimension of the projects\, their current state and the landscape in which they are situated.

DESCRIPTION:An exhibition curated by a distinguished team\, paying tribute to Fabio Mauri\, a central figure in 20th-century Italian art and thought\, on the centenary of his birth (1926–2009).\nThe exhibition traces the twenty years the artist\, writer and intellectual spent in L’Aquila\, from 1979 to 1999\, whilst he taught ‘Aesthetics of Experimentation’ at the Academy of Fine Arts in L’Aquila. That role gave rise to a deep bond with the city\, its students and the local area – a relationship that left its mark both on his own artistic practice and on the cultural history of L’Aquila. \nThrough a selection of works created during these years\, the exhibition today conveys the full critical force of Mauri’s research\, which has always focused on the relationship between image\, ideology and historical memory\, and on the mechanisms through which representations influence individual and collective consciousness. \nWorks created between thirty and forty years ago\, yet still capable of speaking to the present with great clarity: Europe’s ambiguous and liminal position\, suspended between idyll and extermination; the link between art and politics; the memory of the atrocities of war and the temptation to repress them; the dangerous allure of fascist ideology. Viewing these works means accepting an uncomfortable position: that of someone who becomes both a witness to and an accomplice in the horrors and the oblivion of history. \nAnd it is precisely within this tension between the gaze and responsibility that the entire exhibition unfolds\, which does not follow a chronological order. Rather\, it unfolds as a sequence of images that accumulate in the viewer’s mind through associations\, references and contrasts. This is the same logic as Io sono un ariano (I Am an Aryan)\, the artist’s final published work\, released in the year of his death and the centrepiece of the entire exhibition. A book consisting almost entirely of images – a visual diary – it is presented in its entirety in the exhibition to create an experience that also draws on Fabio Mauri’s own life. \nheader: Universal History Archive/Universal Images Group via Getty Images

DESCRIPTION:A legacy of the School of Narrative Dance experience\, Marinella Senatore’s project that explores storytelling through movement and self-directed learning.\nA special feature on the School of Narrative Dance\, which this year focuses on the city of L’Aquila. A project founded in 2012 by Marinella Senatore\, with which she won the MAXXI Prize in 2014 and which confirms her focus on the transformative potential of the creative process\, in its collective\, non-hierarchical dimension\, geared towards listening\, informal education and the promotion of popular culture. \nThe project room traces over a decade of research\, from 2014 to 2026\, through Senatore’s works that have entered the MAXXI Collection. A journey that recounts the growth and international spread of an original and collective artistic practice\, whilst highlighting the legacy and testimonies of the SOND L’Aquila experience.

DESCRIPTION:After almost 30 years\, the reenactment – directed by Giancarlo Gentilucci – of the historic performance in which the artist explores fascism’s seductive power over the audience as its accomplice.\n“Here\, in a short space of time\, one experiences the false ideology\, the abyss of institutionalised superficiality\, the tautology of absolute power\, the intimate malice of the lie hidden within order\, the shame of cultural confusion\, the irresponsibility of those who usurp the freedom of collective judgement\, and the deception of youth\, which brings grace and trust to serve as a prelude to every massacre of its own making.” \nFabio Mauri wrote this in the programme distributed in Rome on the evening of 2 April 1971\, when this performance was staged for the first time. Admission was by invitation only. Cards of different colours indicated the stand where to sit\, simultaneously assigning each participant a social status: authorities\, public figures\, academics\, magistrates\, family members\, rural folk\, the Italian press\, the foreign press\, construction workers\, and Jews. \nDressed in Fascist uniforms and singing ‘Giovinezza’\, the second and third-year students of the Silvio D’Amico Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome guided the large audience to take their seats in the stands surrounding a red platform bearing a black swastika in the centre\, the ‘Piazza d’Armi’\, where the gymnastic displays and debates on Fascist mysticism were to take place in honour of General Ernst von Hussel\, represented – not without irony – by a wax mannequin dressed in full dress uniform\, seated at the centre of the officials’ stand. \nThe performance was modelled on the ‘ludi juveniles’ held in Florence during Hitler’s visit in 1938\, in which Mauri took part\, alongside his friend Pier Paolo Pasolini\, as part of the Bologna team. Thus came into being the first of what Mauri termed ‘complex actions’\, bringing the theme of ideology to the stage for the first time – a theme that would strongly characterise all his subsequent work. \nThe exhibition “Fabio Mauri. Gli anni dell’Aquila” is a project promoted by L’Aquila City Council as part of L’Aquila 2026 – Italian Capital of Culture and funded by RESTART funds under CIPESS Resolution No. 10/2025. The performance is presented in collaboration with Studio Fabio Mauri\, the Academy of Fine Arts in L’Aquila\, and Arti e Spettacolo Impresa Sociale ETS.
